The Sangeet Ceremony
First of all.. what exactly is the Sangeet ceremony all about? Sangeet means “sung together” – such a beautiful meaning if you ask me- and it’s a celebration for the marriage ahead! Formally, the Sangeet was a celebration made up of all the women in the family, but in more modern times, the fellas are invited as well. Though Jimmy and Anjali shared so much happiness at their Haldi ceremony the day before, the Sangeet is a ceremony that solely relishes in the happiness and joy surrounding the couple. It’s kind of like the reception but before the wedding ever even happens.
Before The Sangeet Ceremony
Before this Columbia, South Carolina Sangeet ceremony of their Indian wedding would begin, Anjali and Jimmy kicked off their celebration with some sweet portraits of the two of them. Jimmy was in a gorgeous orange kurta and Anjali couldn’t have looked more stunning alongside him in her maroon and gold lehenga. Truly, what a stunning couple. They were more than ready for their Sangeet ceremony to begin.
After taking some wedding portraits of the couple, they welcomed everyone into their event space and greeted their family. Everyone was so beautifully dressed for the sangeet ceremony in Columbia, SC. As a Columbia, South Carolina wedding photographer, I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for this celebration.

The Sangeet Dancing
In the Sangeet ceremony tradition, women from both the bride and grooms side of the family prepare songs and dances to celebrate the couple’s marriage. The Sangeet dances help families get closer as they prepare these performances and they use them as a tool to just have fun as a united family. Anjali and Jimmy had beautiful performances at their ceremony in Columbia, SC. Each dance followed by thanks and hugs from the couple.
Opening The Dance Floor
After each performance, Jimmy and Anjali’s brother danced for Anjali and invited Anjali to their performance. Jimmy and Anjali danced together and invited every guest to join them to the floor for a night of dancing and celebrating to continue. Like in western wedding receptions, the Sangeet ceremony ended with dancing for hours to celebrate Jimmy and Anjali’s marriage.
