The Arrival
When Jessica Hunt Photography arrived to the Columbia, South Carolina turmeric ceremony the decorations around the outside of the home and pool were vibrantly decorated with reds and yellows. It was decorations you couldn’t ignore. Hanging in the trees on wire were old family photos of Jimmy and Anjali, and in the pool were lotus flowers floating. Gorgeous fabrics hung from the porch and there was a space in the yard where the turmeric ceremony would be placed. This space was a Columbia, SC Indian wedding photographer’s dream. Day 1 of their ceremony was already looking gorgeous.
The Beginning Of The Turmeric Ceremony
Following the tradition of the turmeric ceremony, all the women sat inside together preparing for the ceremony to begin. While their husbands, fathers, and brothers ate a gorgeous catered lunch outside, the women inside were preparing the turmeric paste. Along with that, the elder would mark each member’s forehead with gorgeous powders and bless each individual participating.
Rice was also put into bags for a later blessing to come. Prayers were spoken and Anjali and Jimmy were each given handfuls of rice and blessed to begin this ceremony outside.
The Turmeric Ceremony
The turmeric ceremony in Hindu weddings as a symbol for a blessing to the couple to have a happy marital life. In Indian customs, all the married ladies of the house apply a turmeric paste called haldi to the bride and the groom in order to bless them with a long and strong relationship. The application of haldi ensures that you have radiant and glowing skin on your wedding day as well.
As Jimmy and Anjali stepped outside covered underneath their vibrant fabrics, they were all smiles. Each female family member along with Jimmy and Anjali’s friends made their rounds applying the haldi to their limbs and face. It was such a gorgeous experience to photograph. As their Indian wedding photographer in Columbia, SC it was a joy to be apart of their special tradition. The rice from earlier was given back to Jimmy and Anjali. Each person again made their rounds and grabbed a bit of rice from their palms to kiss and bless their bodies for a beautiful marriage.
The Party
By the end of the Columbia, South Carolina turmeric ceremony, Anjali and Jimmy were covered head to toe in the haldi and they were nothing but smiling faces! Their cousins even planned a special moment for them as well. All the cousins gathered behind the couple to burst confetti over their heads. That was a moment worth photographing. The rest of the ceremony was full of dancing and celebrating. Jimmy even made a splash into the pool. This couple was so ready for day 2 of their Indian wedding ceremony.
