Getting Ready

Anjali finalized her details surrounded by her closest friends and family members. Truly a vision. Anjali was a goddess walking the earth. Once her wedding day look was complete, her family along with Jimmy stepped in to share her joy. She looked amazing alongside her soon to be husband. Jimmy Also prepared for his Indian wedding day in Columbia, South Carolina as the men in the family were gifted gold and he was given a bite of yogurt.

Yogurt is said to be auspicious for a wedding day to fill the belly and keep you cool at the ceremony. Anjali received her yogurt too. Then prayers were said to Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles from the couple’s life path for the day to begin. But we couldn’t head to the ceremony without capturing their perfected wedding day looks!

Before The Ceremony

Anjali awaited at the ceremony site while Jimmy rode to meet her in a red BMW. It may not have been the traditional white horse or elephant but it was just as bold if you ask me. Jimmy danced in the red convertable BMW while dancers lead him to the doors of the ceremony. Warm toned dresses swirled all around to create such a stunning moment during this Indian wedding in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Ceremony

Every spectator danced to begin this ceremony along with Anjali and Jimmy. It was a celebration like no other. Once Jimmy was blessed and could enter his ceremony, Anjali followed soon behind him escorted by her family to meet him at the mandap. After Jimmy and Anjali make their promise to each other of pursuing a life of Dharma, Artha and Kama, they promised they will remain faithful to each other.

Once these promises were made, the Puja lit the sacred fire at the center of the wedding mandap. As prime witness to this union, the fire is fed offerings and prayers to the Gods for all things sacred in a marriage. Jimmy and Anjali had their garments tied together and walked around the fire before sharing the 7 sacred vows.

My favorite thing about Indian weddings are the 7 sacred vows. They go as follows:

  • First step: To respect and honor each other
  • Second step: To share each other’s joy and sorrow
  • Third step: To trust and be loyal to each other
  • Fourth step: To cultivate appreciation for knowledge, values, sacrifice and service
  • Fifth step: To appreciate purity of emotions, love, family duties and spiritual growth
  • Sixth step: To follow principles of Dharma
  • Seventh step: To nurture an eternal bond of friendship and love

After the ceremony was complete, the family gave their blessings to Anjali and Jimmy while the girls in the family expected their payment before returning Jimmy’s shoes. Another tradition I love about Indian weddings.

After The Ceremony

Instead of Anjali and Jimmy heading to their new life together, they instead went to the Indian Temple for some final blessings with the Puja. As an Indian Wedding photographer in Columbia, South Carolina, I was awe struck by the beauty of this temple. Jimmy and Anjali beamed outside of the temple as their wedding day came to an end.
